- edited October 2017I think this is similar to a problem that a customer was having with Quicken 2017, which behaves the same way.
See this reply:
https://getsatisfaction.com/quickencommunity/topics/quicken-for-mac-2017-asking-to-be-installed-when..
Summary:
The message in your screenshot is shown when Quicken thinks that it's running from its disk image.
(When it's just running from your desktop, for example, it will say 'Do you want to install Quicken 2017 in the Applications folder?' and give you a checkbox to not ask again.)
One thing that can cause Quicken to think it's running from its disk image is if there's a hidden file or folder called '.background' in the same folder that contains Quicken (in this case, the /Applications folder).
Clink the link above for instructions about how to remove the '.background' file or folder that is causing Quicken to think that it's running from a disk image. - edited November 2016That totally worked! Thank you- and thank you Christe for your persistence and patience in repeatedly articulating the problem!

- edited November 2016QuickenChrisC BINGO! We love you! That worked.. I found and removed a .background folder (contents dated 2007..don't know why it became a problem with Quicken 2016, but apparently that's it) from my Applications folder, and I can open Quicken without getting the 'please install message now..the acid test will come when I have to patch Quicken 2017, since my previous attempts to patch failed -- but they would if the app thought it was patching the dmg.
THANK YOU ALL for your help on this. I will now go back to trying to balance my budget..hah! - edited October 2017Yay, glad it worked! Sorry it took so long to find an answer!
You can blame me for the weird alerts. We noticed that a LOT of customers actually run Quicken from the disk image instead of installing it in the /Applications folder, which means they can never install any updates! That's really bad, especially right now while we're make so many changes as a result of being divested from Intuit. Quicken needs those updates to continue working with our new backend systems!
So in a recent version of Quicken 2016 (and all versions of Quicken 2017!) I changed the app to make sure it's not running from a disk image. The disk image contains a hidden '.background' folder next to the Quicken application, so that's what I used to detect when the app is on a disk image. It turns out that a couple people have a hidden '.background' folder in their /Applications folder, which is why they're seeing this alert that doesn't make any sense! It's a good thing to clean up that '.background' folder that shouldn't be there anyway, so the net result is progress!
Thanks! - edited December 2016Wow! Eliminating .background did the trick for me. Now, I open Quicken 2016 and am no longer informed that it must be in Applications.
However, the bad news is that my copy of Quicken 2016 -- 3.5.3 will not update correctly. I get the announcement dialogue window, click on the Install Update, watch the download progress and click on Install and Relaunch.
Then I get the attached dialogue window, and after closing Quicken and reopening, it is still 3.5.3! I don't know what to do now. - edited March 2017Patrick, have you restarted your Mac? I remember someone else had this issue, and I think there was some very simple cure -- which I unfortunately don't remember -- so let's start with the simplest one.QMac 2007 & QMac Subscription • Quicken user since 1993

Sorry, restarting did not affect the change I need. No fix.
The workaround I used when I encountered a slightly different problem when updating from 3.2 to 3.3 (or something like that) was to delete the current version of Quicken 2016 and open the original .dmg I downloaded when I bought it. That meant I was several versions behind, but those updates came off OK. I'm concerned that using such a workaround for the long term might prove problematic, or at least very cumbersome!
Pat - edited March 2017Patrick:
I got that same Update Error! alert .. when I updated to QM2017 v4.3.0 back in mid-November. Here is my original report:
https://getsatisfaction.com/quickencommunity/topics/quicken-for-mac-2017-v4-3-released?topic-reply-l..
The problem seems to lie within the third-party updater software - Sparkle - that is used in both QM2016 and QM2017, and may itself have gotten an update that has introduced a bug. That is my best guess, anyway.
My recovery from this annoyance was as follows:- Proceed with the update offer when it appears, but
- When the 'Ready to install' window with the 'Install and Relaunch' button appears: Do NOT click the button.
- In the Finder, navigate to ~/Library/Caches/com.intuit.Quicken.2016/Sparkle/Quicken 2016 xxx. The easy way to get to Library is by holding down the Option key and then in the Finder's menu select Go > Library.
- Make a copy of the Quicken 2016 application and Quicken2016.. .zip files (to your desktop, for example). While doing this, note if the file sizes are reasonable (not zero bytes, e. g. and similar in size to your current Quicken application file).
- Now resume the Quicken update by clicking 'Install and Relaunch' button, and acknowledge the Update Error! alert.
- Quit Quicken.
- Double click on the Quicken 2016 application file you made a copy of above. If this launches - and is version 3.5.4 - all you need to do is copy this file into your Application folder.
- Otherwise, try double clicking on the .zip file. This should unpack a Quicken 2016 application file. Try running this new application file.
Kind of sketchy, but hopefully enough guidance to get you to a working Quicken.
Apologies if I left something out. I wrote this up from my sketchy notes which lack some of the detail I supplied above. And some of the details are different in QM2016 from what I have in QM2017 - so I made my best guess. The console log - see console log example in my earlier post (link provided above) - will provide the exact path to where the cached Quicken download is stored if you cannot figure it out.0 - edited December 2016Thanks, lhossus!
Finding the 3.5.4 version of Quicken 2016 in the Sparkle directory took care of things.
I had saved it to the desktop and when I double-clicked, I was asked if I wanted to install in it Applications. When I said that I did, I saw it disappear from the desktop, and Quicken opened, version 3.5.4.
By the way, I did not see your directions as 'kind of sketchy'. I followed them quite easily, and it solved my (current) troubles.
Thanks again. - edited March 2017While removing .background stopped the incessant demand that I reinstall Quicken 2017 in my applications folder every time I started the application, I am now running into the issue Patrick reported three weeks ago: I am able to download the package for 4.4.0 and 4.4.1 but get the Update Error! message after clicking on Install and Relaunch (this was also a problem prior to removing .background with Quicken 2016 and Quicken 2017 v 4.3.0) I have zipped up the com.intuit.Quicken.2016 and com.intuit.Quick.2015 folders I found in ~/Library/Caches (which presumably aren't used by Quicken 2017 anyway), but that didn't help. Any ideas?
